Africa scores!

004 - Poster beeld Afrika Scoort!

An interactive spectacle about World Cup football in South Africa is starting on 12 June in the Tropenmuseum and the Tropentheater. It focuses on the African experience of this large-scale event. Every day there are different up-to-date reports by African journalists. And as many (African) matches as possible will be shown live on the big screen, so that everyone can immerse themselves in the African World Cup spectacle, while also becoming acquainted with the vision of African journalists on the World Cup and on sport in general.

This summer, the ground floor of the Tropenmuseum will be transformed into a football stadium, especially for the World Cup. Visitors will get to the interactive exhibition about the African experience of World Cup football through a players’ tunnel – to loud cheers and singing from African supporters. Every day, the museum will be in contact with African reporters, journalists and photographers, in order to guarantee continually changing, up-to-the-minute news.

African teams

Information about the African teams that have reached the last round of the World Cup – Algeria, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Ghana and South Africa – will be set out in six ‘goals’. The information on display from these countries will include team photos, fan articles, portraits of the stars, highlights of recent matches and scores.

All the latest pictures

Every day, a different selection of photos and films by African journalists and reporters from the organisation lokaalmondiaal will show the atmosphere before, during and after the matches. Visual material will show reports about African fans on the streets, the atmosphere in township cafés and the production of vuvuzelas (South African horns). A Wall of Fame will display the best new photos of each match. There is also an exhibition of World Press Photos taken during the African qualifying rounds last year. After the summer, this part of the exhibition will go on tour to South Africa.

Interactive table football

A football table will be set up right in the middle of the exhibition, giving visitors the opportunity of taking an active part themselves. Every goal scored is rewarded by up-to-date images from the African media. And for children there is a NewsCorner, showing World Cup items from South African children’s news programmes.

African sport café

During the championship, the Tropentheater will be transformed into an ‘African Sport café’. As many (African) matches as possible and all the finals will be shown live on the big screen in the Kleine Zaal and the Soeterijn. The matches will be preceded by previews and talk shows with interesting guests and experts on (African) football. There will also be informative films about football in Africa. The Soeterijn café will have South African beers on tap and will be decorated with football shirts and posters of the African teams and stars.
