Long Live the President!

Long live the president

Long Live the President! presents 60 portrait-cloths from Africa: commemorative textiles, printed for largely political reasons.

They depict the main figures from the history of independent Africa, from Kwame Nkrumah in 1957 to Jacob Zuma in 2009. Included are important visitors such as Pope John Paul II and Barack Obama.

The cloths serve as propaganda but also to honour the memory of a person or event. They form fascinating examples of contemporary design, social communication and historical documents in one. A concise text and unique images put this little-known subject in context.

Exhibition
