New Guinea
The Tropenmuseum boasts a world-famous New Guinea collection. Few other institutions can match the quantity of valuable material available in this museum section. One of the oldest surviving korwars in the world is displayed at the entrance to this section. Because of their unique value, the objects are showcased in serene and simple settings, so that the objects themselves come into their own.
The presentation is divided into three themes: Ancestors and Spirits,Rhythm of Nature and Men’s Houses. Two subsidiary themes appear at the start and finish of the presentation: Islanders and Exotic Wall (with objects from Oceania).
TIP: Metal was unknown to many in New Guinea until well into the twentieth century, so they used other resources from their environment. How many of these materials can you find?
