Southeast Asia
Sculptures from Borobudur, finely crafted golden jewellery and an amazing collection of Indo-Javanese bronze. The Tropenmuseum collection contains some superb items from Southeast Asia.
Southeast Asia incorporates countries from Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia to the Philippines.
It is a region with an extraordinary cultural dynamic and openness in which rich and diverse cultures have influenced each other for centuries. The result of this mutual influence is apparent in the presentation: unique objects with a common history.
TIP: Four symbols recur in many Southeast Asian cultures: a lotus, a dragon/serpent, a man sitting on his haunches and a bird. Can you find each of these in the exhibition?
