Unique acquisition of Indonesian painter of world wide fame
The Tropenmuseum proudly presents the only self-portrait that is known to exist by Indonesian artist Raden Saleh.
Raden Saleh
Raden Saleh (circa 1811-1880) can be regarded as the pioneer of modern Indonesian painting. In 1829 he got the opportunity to take lessons in painting and drawing in the Netherlands. In just a short period he gained success with his romantic landscapes and portraits. In 1851, Raden Saleh went back to the Dutch East Indies, but before he departed he received the title of 'Painter of the king'.

Special thanks
The Royal Tropical Institute, which the museum is part of, expresses its gratitude to the late Mrs. J. In Tholenaar-van Raalte. We were able to purchase the painting thanks to her legacy.
