Ben Meulenbeld

Curator Culture and History of South Asia

Ben Meulenbeld conducts research in the fields of anthropology, history and archaeology/art history for South, South-East and Central Asia. As a consultant and trainer of museum staff in the field of collection and museum management, he has worked in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India and Ethiopia. He has more than 20 years’ experience in museum policy and practice, gained in museums in the Netherlands and abroad.

Material culture and the religious cultures of South, South-East and Central Asia are Mr. Meulenbeld’s specialization. His focus is on popular belief systems and their artistic expression. His interests include the historical ties and trading relationships between East and West, folk and popular art and South Asian textiles.

Since 1986, Ben Meulenbeld has participated in numerous exhibitions as a researcher and curator for the Tropenmuseum. In 2005 he created a major exhibition on rituals and the individual contact of believers with Hindu gods. He was also a member of the team that created the re-installation of the Tropenmuseum’s exhibit on India.
