Sustainable Spice Conference
The theme 'herbs and spices' can not be left out of the events of our anniversary year. In one hundred years of history, KIT has always been closely involved in the spice industry. In particular, since Indonesia has always been one of the largest producers of pepper and other spices. Furthermore, the spices sector is ideally suited for poverty reduction since the industry accommodates many small businesses.
Consumers as well as food industry professionals demand high quality, traceable ingredients. But what about spices, which are just a tiny fraction of most products? What are the opportunities of making the spice trade sustainable? What joint investments are needed? And how can farmers and small businesses meet the requirements for sustainability and certification?
The spice sector in the Netherlands is working hard to achieve sustainability. But because of the predominance of small businesses in the sector, from producers to importers, collaboration is essential. On Tuesday 12 October, these and other important questions will be discussed during an afternoon conference at the Royal Tropical Institute.
We invite you to help build support for bringing sustainability to the Dutch spice sector, together with spice producers, importers and retailers. Farmers’ organizations and exporters from Vietnam, Uganda, India and Mozambique will also be present.
The afternoon will begin with a number of plenary presentations, followed by break-out sessions in five areas: 1 farm production, 2 import/export, 3 processing industry and retail, 4 policies and regulations and 5 chain partnerships.
