Premiere 'Doce Brasil Holandęs', documentary about Maurits of Nassau in Recife
Monica Schmiedt, the maker of the documentary 'Doce Brasil Holandęs' (Sweet Dutch Brazil) does not focus solely on Johan Maurits of Nassau, but rather on the issue: how is it possible that a people (in this case the Brazilians) reflect so positively on their occupant (the Dutch, as represented by Nassau).
Nassau is an important historical figure in Brazil. He is an outsider because of his liberal vision. On his travels he was accompanied by the painters Frans Post and Albert Eckhout who captured the first 'images' of people and nature of 'the new world'. Nassau also built the first bridges in Brazil and the first synagogue (for the Jews in Brazil who sought their freedom in religion).
