RED
5 November 2010 until 8 May 2011, Great Hall
Leading theme in this exhibition is a colour: red. In many cultures red is one the most important (symbolic) colours. The colour red, sometimes manifest and intense and then again subtle or faded by the relentless work of time steers the perception and understanding of the object. Its personal interpretation and symbolic meaning differ per nation, per culture and even per person. Some have associations with happiness, love and prosperity, others with power, violence and prohibition.
The ethnographic collection on display comes mainly from the Museum of World Cultures in Basel and the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. But the exhibition also ventures in the realms of modern and contemporary western and non-western art: The Hearttube dress from the Helen Storey Foundation, an Ifa altar by Olazabal, the works of Kumari Nahappan and some spectacular installations including Madeleine Berkhemers web of 500 red panty hoses and one white marble nude!
