For children

in het restaurant

For children from the age of 1 there are lots of fun things to do in the Tropenmuseum. Every weekend the smallest children (under 6) and their parents can visit the Kartini Wing, where they can enjoy drawing, building and folding. For children aged 4 and over there are special children’s routes through the museum.

Please note: All children’s activities are in Dutch only.

Tropenmuseum Junior

Tropenmuseum Junior is part of the Tropenmuseum. It is a museum especially targeted at 6- to 13-year-olds. Ever since its foundation in 1975, it has made interactive exhibitions for children. Over the years, Tropenmuseum Junior has developed its own museological working method, which serves many of our museum colleagues as an example. The exhibitions, offering immersive experiences, are aimed at making children curious and open to different cultures, helping them to grow up into tolerant, respectful world citizens.

Due to the fact that the Tropenmuseum Junior staff does their own research, the knowledge they have acquired of other cultures is always up-to-date; this is incorporated into well thought through, interactive educational programmes. On a yearly basis Tropenmuseum Junior attracts at least 30,000 visitors. On school days children can visit the museum with their class and teachers; at the weekend and during the holidays they can come with their families.

Each of the exhibitions runs for two and a half years, and all the school programmes have always been fully booked. On average on non-school days 80% of the general public programmes have been fully booked.

The methodology and quality of the exhibitions in Tropenmuseum Junior are held in high regard internationally and are an example to the museum field world-wide.
