World of Music
New permanent exhibition
Find out how music and musical instruments can travel huge distances in World of Music. All around the world, fusions of style lead to new kinds of music; African rhythms echo on Trinidad and the Austrian accordion is a must for a Mexican ballad.
Musical world tour
Music, film and touch screens combine to tell the story of the uses and techniques of music and performance. A film shown on three wide screens relates the astonishing journey of an instrument and its players. How the ukulele made its way from Portugal via Hawaii and the Moluccas to the Dutch island of Ameland, and how the accordion came to North Mexico.
Music around the world
In this presentation, with a touch on a map you can listen and watch music clips from around the world. How about music from Holland; Kyteman’s Hiphop Orkest’s rendering ofBlew like trumpets.
Or listen to the sounds different instruments make, like the single-skin drum:
Our online collection provides more information and you can listen to the sound this drum makes, as well as other musical instruments in the World of Music.
Your voice
The human voice, the foremost of all musical instruments, also plays a role in the World of Music. Sing a song in the Museum of Forgotten Songs: from your childhood - new or old, modern or traditional, global or local. Or listen to astonishing vocal techniques and learn how to sing as these singers sing at Singing School: from yodelling to Siberian throat singing.
