From a feathered mask made in 1880 to a contemporary signboard for a Ghanaian barber, the Africa presentation takes you on a dynamic journey: old and new, city and savannah, religion and pop music, kings and soccer fans. Objects, dance, film, music and theatre bring you to Africa’s past and its present-day.
Africa south of the Sahara is almost three times as large as Europe and is enormously diverse. Differences between cultures are reflected in a wide range of exhibits. These come from dozens of cultures in a score of countries, such as the ancient Ashanti kingdom of Ghana and the Yoruba of Nigeria.

Five themes
Vitality, diversity and imagination are key aspects of an exhibition arranged in five themes: Status, Religion, Masquerade, Form and Contact. Displays of objects are accompanied by multimedia presentations that transport you to exuberant mask dances in a Masquerade cinema, African rappers in Zap Afrika! videos and much besides.
