Cool Japan Anime: What a Genderful World
18 April 2020

Anime with a gender theme

After the successful series in connection with the Cool Japan exhibition, we and the Melkweg will continue bringing the best anime to the big screen. During the What a Genderful World expo we’re screening a series of anime with strong female leading roles from studios like Ghibli and Chizu.

Japanese anime plays with gender. It’s a world where everything’s possible. We see, for example, a tough witch aged 13 on an adventure, a single mother with her werewolf children, an ex-pop star with difficulty leaving her past behind, a teenager who can travel through time and an age-old story about a princess who refuses to be forced into a straightjacket.
