Chinese New Year is based on the lunar calendar. Every year Chinese New Year is celebrated for 15 days, to mark the beginning of the new lunar year. This is sometime between 21 January and 20 February. It varies from year to year. For two weeks long, all kinds of things are organised during these celebrations. There are fireworks, dragon dancing, the home is cleaned from top to bottom and families come together to enjoy delicious food. The lunar calendar has a cycle of 12 years. Each of the 12 years is dedicated to a different animal. This is called the zodiac. Get to know more about Chinese New Year and the zodiac in Festivities! Worldwide and get started on the creative activity.
From 14 January to 5 March 2023 Festivities! Worldwide is about Chinese New Year
Paper cutting is one of the oldest crafts in China. Figures and patterns are cut out of paper. In the past it was a cheap way of decorating the home during seasonal and family festivities, like during Chinese New Year. Every new Chinese year is represented by an animal. This year is the year of the Rabbit. Get to know more about the animal for the year you were born. In this creative activity you’ll do some Chinese paper cutting yourself. You’ll cut out a rabbit and learn to write the Chinese character for this animal.
Choose a festival, take an assignment card and go and explore together in the party shop. Letters are hidden everywhere, do the musical quiz, learn how to dance and listen to a story. Found all the letters? Then fill in the code word and have a photo taken at your party.
