Furoshiki

Wrapping

When you give a present, how you do it can be very important. If you wrap the gift, it’s a bigger surprise.

To wrap or not to wrap

In some cultures, you must not wrap your gift, so that everyone can see what you’re giving. In other places you don’t unwrap a present when the person who gave it to you is there. What if you don’t like it?

In Japan people put a lot of time and effort into wrapping gifts. The more layers the better. The exhibition includes a huge, highly instagrammable installation of furoshiki (Japanese gift wrapping cloths) which you can step inside, making you the gift!

The Tropenmuseum worked with Musubi, the leading Japanese manufacturer of wrapping cloths, to develop a custom-made design specially for the exhibition. The furoshiki is on sale at the museum shop, which is full of fabulous gifts.
